For nearly two decades, many players were contempt that Timesplitters would remain in the memories of players that enjoyed the games in the early 2000s. However, with the massive acquisition push by Embracer Group/THQ Nordic, it was indicated there was room for more titles to come in the future. Firstly was the firm purchasing the rights to the series.
It was then followed by Free Radical Design co-founder Steve Ellis also joining THQ Nordic shortly after. And in 2021, it was officially confirmed that the firm would be pursuing a new entry for the Timesplitters series. And while the firm has remained quiet at work on what could be a major release for THQ Nordic coming forward, it appears the team is shuttering.
As part of a new initiative by Embracer Group to restructure its resources, layoffs and studio closings are listed symptoms of this decision. And from Video Game Chronicle, the email sent out by the parent company was passed to the outlet, which reads:
“As we move through the consultation process and face the potential closure of Free Radical Design on 11 December 2023, I want to express my gratitude for your commitment and the remarkable work you’ve done and still keep doing. This is a challenging time for all of us but especially for you, and our focus is to support you as much as we can during this transition.”
Although nothing has been officially confirmed by Embracer Group, Plaion, or Free Radical Design, Video Game Chronicle has pressed that plenty of staff on social media are engaging in new job opportunities. It is even said that neighboring U.K. teams such as Splash Damage are ensuring interviews for those affected by the decision as well.
This is yet another team that faces closure as other legacy teams were also shuttered by Embracer Group recently. From Volition, it was confirmed earlier this summer that the Saints Row & Red Faction developer would close its doors just after 30 years of operating. You can read the full report by heading here.
