Ever since the dawn of the 2020s, there was an immense amount of pressure on manufacturers to meet the demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Enough so that even 46th President Joe Biden said to investigate the issue. However, despite the upset for other platforms, Nintendo continued to push for more units in the market. At the time, it was reported that roughly 10 percent of production was increased.

By July that year, Nintendo Switch was accounted for being the best-selling console in 2020. And this trend certainly continued upon entering the holiday season with the release of the Xbox Series X|S & PlayStation 5. While demand surged for newer hardware, the Nintendo Switch still outpaced its competitors despite the same setback.

Another symptom of this time period was the growing issue of resellers online. And with the Nintendo Switch successor expected to be revealed before the end of the fiscal year, Nintendo intends to counteract any effort in favor of its consumers. From its recent investor Q&A, Nintendo stated the best option is to producer more systems.

As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year. In addition to this, we are considering whether there are any other measures that can be taken to the extent allowed by laws and regulations, taking into account the circumstances of each region.

Shuntaro Furukawa, Nintendo President

“Although we were unable to produce sufficient quantities of Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved. At this time, we do not believe that the shortage of components will have a significant impact on the production of the successor model,” the IGN translation also revealed.

Although details are still unknown pertaining to the next Nintendo console, there has been several accounts suggesting it is an iteration of the Nintendo Switch. For the most part, it is still true to form supporting Nintendo Switch cartridges and new rumors indicate that the system will feature magnetic Joy-Cons.
