The ongoing spotlight shined on the Nintendo Switch 2 has revealed a lot of new information on the new console. With the release date in reach set for this June, the Japanese firm has addressed plenty on the newest hardware coming. During the presentation, Nintendo showcased many attributes for the Nintendo Switch 2 like its magnetic Joy-Con 2 & mouse peripherals, 120hz output, and 3D spacial audio.
Additionally, there were also new details on what the system will offer for users playing legacy titles. From the original Nintendo Switch, there will be new Nintendo Switch 2 versions for select third-party titles. Coinciding with backwards compatibility, there will be more flexibility with sharing your titles too. Even if purchased digitally, you can lend your games via Virtual Game Card on both devices.
One eye-opener is the new cartridge for the Nintendo Switch 2. From the reveal for Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red revealed that cartridges will now be shipped with 64 GB of space. Previously, it was understood that the initial console would find these upgraded cartridges, but the successor introduced it instead. More troubling for many physical users is the new Game-Key Card that Nintendo introduced as well.
“Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data. Instead, the game-key card is your ‘key’ to downloading the full game to your system via the internet. After it’s downloaded, you can play the game by inserting the game-key card into your system and starting it up like a standard physical game card,” Nintendo elaborated on the support page.
“The game itself isn’t included on the game-key card, so you’ll have to download it before you can play. When you insert the game-key card, further instructions will be displayed on the HOME Menu. Please follow the instructions to download the game. […] An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time. After this, the game can be started even without an internet connection.”
This operates similar to Xbox or PlayStation as the full client is not available directly on the media. But, it is required to be inserted to launch the game despite asking for an install through online. “However, like regular physical software, the game-key card must be inserted into the system in order to play the game,” Nintendo adds.
