In late February, Warner Bros. issued the final trailer for The Minecraft Movie. And although the IP was massive in its own right, it was not predicted the magnitude that the box office would face then. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Minecraft has already generated more than $815 million in the global box office. The announcement comes as for the new ‘Block Party Edition’ showings of Minecraft encouraging the rowdy response in theaters.
During the arrival of Minecraft in theaters, it set a new record that nearly doubled the previous. The Hollywood Reporter shared that in its opening weekend, Minecraft was met with $313 million; The Super Mario Bros. Movie netted $146 million in that same window. In a report from Deadline, discussions for a sequel are already being pursued at Warner Bros.
This week, Microsoft released its earnings report for Q3 2025 which reveals the total turnout for Minecraft players from the response to the film’s release. Early on, The Game Business calculated roughly 30 percent was netted for Minecraft in traffic. However, Microsoft now discloses the number is now almost 80 percent.
“Finally, it is fantastic to see the success of Minecraft Movie which is the top grossing film of the year. In addition to monetizing our IP in new ways, we have seen a 75 percent-plus increase in weekly active users of the game year-over-year since the release. In closing, we are rapidly innovating to expand our opportunity across both consumer and commercial businesses,” CEO Satya Nadella says.
And this is not the first instance Microsoft was faced with massive influx in gaming from transmedia response. During the release of the Fallout show on Amazon Prime, it was revealed that hours driven for the IP was more than 5x its average in response to the live-action series.
