The success of the Minecraft movie can be determined by multiple factors. Success of the IP: in 2021, the game has generated more than 1 trillion hours of related content watched on YouTube. The star power: Jason Mamoa (Aquaman), Jack Black (School of Rock), and Jared Hess (Nacho Libre) all offer enticing draw to the film.
There is also the promotions for the film. The last trailer that release in February painted a very quotable picture for the film come its release in theaters. And, the food. While not directly from the games, Warner Bros. did partner with McDonald’s to release themed meals based on the new movie that accommodates both child & adult fans of Minecraft.
Currently, the box office has already grossed $313 million globally; a new record for video game movies. And now, the IP is looking to expand with yet another film already. Even when generating $57 million in its opening day alone, there was a good chance a second film could come from this. Speaking to Deadline, director Jared Hess elaborates on the matter.
“Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel, and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world.
“The fans are just having such a good time. We teased it in the end credits, and the fans seem to be going wild for it.” Hess does continue on what the new film would explore from its ending. “The character we teased is Alex, the other massively critical character in Minecraft. It’s Steve and Alex, and so that’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt.”
Do you see a second Minecraft movie coming from the current trajectory of the current film?
