Although Sony Interactive Entertainment is slated to be kicking off the next console generation with smooth sailing when shipping the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles did have some advantages that the PlayStation hardware did not implement at the time. Elements such as 1440p display support and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). However, Sony did press it is looking to integrate the support later on.

More specifically for the performance system, VRR was even pressed directly in statement by Senior Director of Content Communications Sid Shuman. More excitingly, the firm hinted in the latest firmware update for PlayStation hardware that the feature is close to releasing. Then the update included UI upgrades and improvements to the dedicated app.

This week, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed that VRR is officially on the way and will launch this week for a selection of games. This includes:

Astro’s Playroom
Call of Duty: Vanguard
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War,
Destiny 2
Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
DIRT 5
Godfall
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Resident Evil Village
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Tribes of Midgard

Additionally, Arkane Lyon went on to reveal Deathloop will also receive support for the feature this week as well on Twitter. “We’re excited to announce that DEATHLOOP supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) on PS5!” the team wrote in the post.

“On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing,” Hideaki Nishino, Platform Experience Senior Vice President writes in the announcement.

“Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.* Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game patch and future games may include VRR support at launch.” Unlike Xbox, this is not a blanket feature, but overtime the system will be added to more titles.

Are you excited Variable Refresh Rate is finally coming to PlayStation 5?
