To those that are still looking to get their hands on a next-generation console – either Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, or either iteration of PlayStation 5 – it is a tricky feat to achieve. And while plenty of scalpers are continuing to run up the price on Ebay and other internet marketplaces, those systems were sold rightfully. And both firms are leaving its remarks on the success of launch for both platforms.
From Microsoft just earlier this month, the firm presses that it sold the most units at launch than ever in the history of Xbox. Additionally, the Xbox Series X|S also broke records for offering the most amount of games at launch; approximately 3,594 supported titles. Even more, the firm explains roughly 70 percent of new owners also pay for Xbox Game Pass as well.
Now in a recent interview with Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan, he shares that the performance of the PlayStation 5 on day one is extremely overwhelming as all stock has been diminished immediately as store doors opened.
Everything is sold. Absolutely everything is sold. And everything will be sold in Russia, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve spent much of the last year trying to be sure that we can generate enough demand for the product. And now in terms of my executive bandwidth I’m spending a lot more time on trying to increase supply to meet that demand.
Ryan does go on to elaborate that if not for COVID-19 staggering the amount of consoles being made, more were expected to sell, but not by a large margin. “They way we took it to market might have been a bit different, but the actual product would have been the same. We might have had a few more to sell, but not very many: the guys on the production/manufacturing side have worked miracles.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Ryan also pressed on the matter of Xbox Game Pass. While already established PlayStation Now, the division lead tells that Sony Interactive Entertainment will have a response to the service in due time. You can read the full report by heading here.
