Just over a month ago, the video game industry grew concerned over the next possible acquisition by Microsoft: Discord. In that, it was reported the Xbox company would be purchasing the communications platform with $10 billion on the table. However, unlike Skype, the potential buy appeared to be with more value than the 2011 purchase.
But, Microsoft did not come to an agreement with Discord as the firm later ended talks with the firm. While there was no acquisition upon exiting the month-long negotiation, context on Discord’s decision did surface. Frankly, the firm decided to remain independent due to its continued profitability. However, the company would consider acquisition once vale starts to tank again.
And so with no Discord on Xbox, an app that is, the new talk is for a PlayStation version. In a new press release from Sony Interactive Entertainment on Monday, the PlayStation company has invested a minor stake into Discord which will bring a dedicated app to PlayStation Network next year.
We’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.
Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation Network. Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.
Jim Ryan, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO
“To bring these experiences to life for our players, Sony Interactive Entertainment has made a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round,” Ryan adds. “From our very first conversation with co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy, I was inspired by their lifelong love for gaming and our teams’ shared passion to help bring friends and communities together in new ways.
“Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.” Although there is no official app, Discord is somewhat available on Xbox.
Through a recent Xbox Insider Alpha Ring update, the new ‘Chronium’ Microsoft Edge version comes to Xbox consoles. In that, users can indulge in both xCloud and Google Stadia even. The same is also been tested for Discord as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
