Since the launch of Pokémon Go back in 2016 and following the instant success of the augmented reality title hitting the mobile market, we have seen other franchises follow in Niantic’s footsteps after with the recently revealed Minecraft Earth title which is said to drop later this year.
Now it seems that Dragon Quest will be entering the same genre of games with the newly announced Dragon Quest Walk. Square Enix revealed at the presentation for the upcoming title that a closed beta will be taking place next week on June 11th for Android and iOS users in Japan.
The premise of the game is that you play a story that continues to develop as you walk. By interacting with townspeople, grow crops, and fight different enemies as you walk. The game will shift the real world around you into the universe of Dragon Quest and adapt to your surroundings to create new adventure for you.
To trigger quests in the game, players will have to visit different landmarks which are said to be littered throughout Japan when the beta starts. Other features players will have available is to decorate their own room with furniture and other items.
During the title’s announcement event, Executive Producer for the Dragon Quest franchise Yuu Miyake discussed a little bit about the current status for the anticipated Dragon Quest XII.
By the way, about Dragon Quest XII, which I’m sure is on everyone’s mind—[Yuji] Horii and I are currently making preparations on series developments that will connect to XII. I think it’s still too early, but we would like announce it in some form, so please wait a little while longer.
In other Dragon Quest-related news, it was discovered back in January through a datamine for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that Dragon Quest III’s Erdrick could be an upcoming character to be revealed for title’s Fighter Pass. As we are only a week away from this year’s E3, look towards Nintendo’s coming Direct as we will possibly see the net character to join the fight.
