Speculation surrounding the remaining characters that will be coming to Nintendo’s latest platform fighter Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have been all over the place since the initial announcement of the $25 Fighters Pass. From circulating rumors to hype-fueled guesses and feasible placed teasers: fans are eager to see who’s next to join the battle.

In the latest datamine for the December released game, more confirmation on already announced characters have appeared alongside a wave of speculation have hit with what the possibilities are for the remaining characters will be.

The first reading “fighter_kind_packu” refers to Petey Piranha as the name of the Japanese plant the character is based off is the Pakkun Plant. Following with “fighter_kind_jack” which corresponds to Joker, who was previously announced, and as well as Jack Frost from the Persona series. Lastly the third label “fighter_kind_brave” is what raises an eyebrow in question as the name is as evident compared to the first two.

According to the leak from 5Channel, the enigmatic third character is determined to be Erdrick of Dragon Quest III. For what supports the speculation for the Dragon Quest character is the choice to use brave found in the datamine. As most protagonists in the franchise are titled as a ‘Hero’, the Japanese version of the RPG uses ‘Yuusha’ which translates to brave.

For the remaining characters the leak lists Ryu Hayabusa of Ninja Gaiden, Doomguy from the iconic first-person shooter Doom, and Steve from Minecraft. Ryu being added to the roster circulates around another rumor for a suspected Ninja Gaiden title set to release for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. While the remaining two have been part of the discussion to join the game’s growing cast since before the game released.

With fans discovering the chances of Steve taking a spot in the Ultimate, many are left disappointed that he could be joining over a more credible character. But if this makes anything better, the leak also states that the face of Minecraft will have an alternate costume which dresses him as Master Chief from Halo.

With all this speculation for the possible upcoming characters for Ultimate, it is best for fans to take this all with the least amount of trust for now. Though none of the speculated characters have been officially revealed yet; to why they might make an appearance seems to be a good alibi ultimately as their debuts will intersect with upcoming releases from each respected series. Steve for Minecraft Dungeons, Doomguy for Doom Eternal, Ryu Hayabusa for the 30th anniversary title, and Erdrick for Dragon Quest 11.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is out now for Nintendo Switch.
