Although PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is paramount for the battle royale genre with its barebones gunplay which cultivated the draw to the game type, the series has been facing a rebranding of sorts. While not official at the time, developer Krafton announced PUBG: New State for mobile devices. Although the same game in concept, it is not the original game with only the ‘PUBG’ moniker in the title.

However, that is a decision that was later executed for the original game as well. When speaking to PC Gamer, the original title will be renamed to PUBG Battlegrounds moving forward. “Krafton is actively expanding the PUBG brand through a variety of new experiences set in its universe. Rebranding PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds to PUBG: Battlegrounds is the first step in us realizing this vision.”

To expand this idea, the release of PUBG: New State will solidify the decision. Recently, Krafton uploaded a new trailer for the title revealing a release date for this month. You can watch the video in the footage below:

“PUBG: New State inherits the core of the PUBG IP and will have a competitiveness in and of itself on the global market. Krafton will continue to produce games that will be enjoyed by players across the world. We’re committed to offering an expanded experience based on the belief that games will become the most powerful type of media,” Krafton CEO CH Kim shares.

Additionally, there is some speculation the decision was in par to the possible departure of the name-shared creator, Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene. Previously, Greene announced to be departing from the IP as he forms a new entity, PlayerUnknown Productions. You can read the full report by heading here.
