Unlike Microsoft’s Xbox or Nintendo’s latest Switch platform, Sony Interactive Entertainment has yet to properly crown a mascot for its platform. Master Chief & Super Mario are synonymous with each respective systems, but the closest thing for PlayStation is a mixed bag. Is it Ratchet? Ellie? Perhaps Nathan Drake? Well, there could be one less candidate it appears.
As we all know, The Last of Us on HBO Max is one of the largest releases on the platform to date. Enough of this influence has already greenlit a second season before Episode 3 aired. But, an interview with executive producer and The Last of Us Part II game director Neil Druckmann reveals that Uncharted has properly concluded.
When speaking to Buzzfeed, Druckmann explains pressure for another installment requires the team to produce a new Uncharted – similar to The Last of Us. But he shares the team is satisfied with how the last game concluded as it is “moving on.”
We’ve been pretty open that the next Last of Us game is going to be this multiplayer experience, where you’ll be able to enter the world of The Last of Us with your friend and get to experience the tension and the brutality of that world — and a brand new story and cast of characters that live in another city that we haven’t seen yet in the world of The Last of Us. This is going to be another chapter in the universe of The Last of Us.
Beyond that, I know there’s a bunch of people wondering about The Last of Us Part 3 and whether that will be a thing or not. All I could say is, at Naughty Dog we’re very, very privileged that our publisher is Sony — which means Sony funds our games, supports us, and we’re owned by Sony. They have supported us every step of the way to follow our passions — meaning that just because something is successful, people think there’s all this pressure and we have to make a sequel.
That’s not the case. For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on. Likewise, with The Last of Us, it’s up to us whether we want to continue it or not.
Howbeit, there is still conjecture online suggesting that Naughty Dog is planning to further its work on Uncharted. In a ‘Live from PS5’ ad, it depicts an Uncharted-like experience in one segment of the video. However, this could be nodding towards the reported Uncharted remake that is currently in development internally at PlayStation Studios.
As for current projects at Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part III is already rumored to begun development. In a separate interview with IGN, Druckmann also pressed on the topic before. At the time it was told that the story was already on paper for a new game, however, the concept has yet to be realized into the proper format for PlayStation.
Additionally, Druckmann already pressed on the new multiplayer experience coming to PlayStation 5. With little details on what direction this new game is to follow, it is certain it will be a proper sequel to The Last of Us: Factions that originated on the original PlayStation 3 version of The Last of Us.
