
Among the ranks for the Call of Duty series, new releases remained annually for more than a decade, but, there is concerns suggesting that this tradition might actually be ending moving forward. In one claim from last year, user @RalphsValve told that internal discussions are undergoing consideration to break yearly installments. The timing was suggested to be tangible with the current performance for Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Although the 2021 title still managed to stack as the top seller even during Halo Infinite’s release, it is understandable the position Activision is in to consider the possibility. Atop of the plans for Activision’s acquisition from Microsoft, there was also speculation that the buyout would sway the firm to follow through with bi-annual releases for Call of Duty.
From Bloomberg Tech, Jason Schreier reports that Activision will officially be following through with the decision by delaying Treyarch’s unannounced 2023 game into 2024. Bloomberg previously reported that Activision was initially planning to administer three games by 2023’s end. However, the abrupt delay now changes the Call of Duty forecast for the next two years.
Recently, Infinity Ward pressed on its plans for the next installment it is responsible for. In a thread on Twitter, the developer confirmed it will be pursuing a sequel for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) and will feature a new engine to craft the game. Additionally, it was also disclosed that a follow-up to Warzone which was introduced as a mode for Modern Warfare that corroborates the previous report by Bloomberg.
In a statement by an Activision spokesperson, the firm told “We have an exciting slate of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences this year, next year and beyond. Reports of anything otherwise are inaccurate. We look forward to sharing more details when the time is right.” Schreier added that plans continued after some town hall chats with DLC for 2022’s game to stretch into next year.
For Call of Duty in terms of expanding its reach, there is a recent report that a new film is in discussion to be greenlight. More impressively, the aforementioned movie is said to be starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson who recently referenced a new “badass” video game movie he is excited to be involved in.
