In the age of video game remakes, Square Enix appears to be at the helm of this new tradition with Final Fantasy VII Remake. The game following its launch last spring has went on to receive several nominations at The Game Awards and winning Best Score/Music & Best Role Playing Game. And with more parts on the way to conclude the original 1997 story for new hardware, it is likely the success will kickstart more initiatives as well.
From a report over at Video Game Chronicles, Chrono Cross is apparently in the pipeline for a remake as well. The outlet previously reported on PlayStation announcing a remake for a “big game” sometime around the holidays this year which could be a sign for this project. Additionally, XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker disclosed that the project was identified as a multiplatform title when corroborating with previous reports.
“Chrono Cross Remastered, I think, was already on the Nivida leak list, so the game shouldn’t be a surprise – it was on Nvidia’s list. But I was told that that VGC article is about Chrono Cross Remastered,” Video Game Chronicles transcribed from a recent XboxEra podcast episode. “What else I was told—because everyone’s working under the assumption that it’s a PlayStation exclusive—I’ve been told that it’s not. The only word that was used was ‘multiplat’.”
The publication continues on the significance of Irish performer Éabha McMahon who went on to disclose performing an Irish theme for Chrono Cross recently that was not available to the public at the time of the interview on Irish radio station WLR FM. McMahon also told she perform with Michael McGlynn and his daughter Ashlyn that was later discovered to be working with Yasunori Mitsuda according to a photo posted on Twitter.
While hopes were set high for The Game Awards this month, the unannounced title ended up not making it to the stage obviously. However, it was later announced that mobile game Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space would be featuring a crossover with Chrono Cross which could be a likely possibility for some of the recent reportings on the game.
Ultimately, it is still left for speculation to determine if that will come at a later date. In terms of current Chrono-like properties on the way, Sabotage’s Sea of Stars is scheduled to ship holiday 2022 the developer shared recently. Alongside partnering with Chrono Trigger composer Yasunori Mitsuda, the game is slated to hit Nintendo Switch as well. You can read the full report by heading here.
