Near the end of May, Supermassive Games revealed that the first in a series of thrilling titles under the Dark Pictures Anthology will be dropping this coming August with Man of Medan. As for the following titles after this Summer, the developer was not ready to reveal what the strand of games will be or how many exactly there is planned for the anthology.

According to a recent interview with Game Informer, Supermassive Managing Director Pete Samuels and Marketing Head James Scalpello shared that as part of the two year release cycle the studio has planned for the series, a total of eight titles are already planned even before the first installment officially released.

“The second one is well into production,” Samuels answered, counting numbers off on his fingers. “So we know what that is. Third one is going to the end of its design phase in writing. And we’re shooting that with the cast in two weeks’ time to get all that. In the fourth one, I think we have a concept of the movements and design. The fifth one, we’re working on and we have the concept and are about to move into design. But we know what the horror story is also for the sixth, seventh, and eighth.”

The implication we already follow with the name “anthology,” it was expected that a few titles after Man of Medan were to come, but for eight is more than I would have guessed to be honest. As for plot and context to support future installments, Scalpello explained that due to the amount of sub-genres can ultimately bring more than enough for the team to explore and still bring fresh experiences for each one.

“Remember, we love horror, there’s 39 sub-genres or something like that of our own that we can choose from, which we subvert and twist. All of the stories have an element of the real world about them as well. So we do have an awful lot of subject matter that we can sort of pull from with a very broad, very broad brush.” Seeing how soon the first title is with the following already “well into production,” it looks that time might not be an issue for Supermassive as the drive for two title releases per year is enough to bring their scheme into reality.

Ultimately, the studio plans to continue working on new installments for the series “until somebody tells us to stop,” Samuels tells Game Informer. Explaining the developer will continue working on more games for Dark Pictures as long as its vision still holds up to their standards when developing the next project.

Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is slated for a release on August 30, 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
