In the current landscape related to Activision’s Call of Duty franchise, the series is right now partaking in Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Momentarily, the November release is in its second content season alongside the already established Call of Duty: Warzone which shipped just over a year ago now. However, discussion for what the next game is to be already lingers online as you might expect.
For those that played the story campaign for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), you might already be familiar with the heavy hints at a similar rebooted experience being applied to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as the follow-up. And rightly so since there is no plans for any other team to helm 2021’s Call of Duty release.
But, one rumor from Call of Duty-centered outlet Modern Warzone suggests that developer Sledgehammer Games is coming out of retirement to work on this year’s entry. Previously, the game studio upon conflicting on the ambition for 2020’s release fell to shambles with Raven Software, the team was demoted to being a support developer as Treyarch was ushered to release Black Ops Cold War a year early.
As for the claims made by the outlet, the game is suggested to be yet another return to the World War II era as Sledgehammer Games is said to be responsible for the alleged ‘Call of Duty: Vanguard’. The website indicates through its sources to be the title for this year’s Call of Duty and further elaborates to be corresponding with a familiar leaker, VictorZ, who teased at a new World War II game as well.
More into the details, Vanguard is said to take place in the 1950s outside the recorded timeframe of the Second World War. Moreover, Modern Warzone goes on to speculate that this new entry might be the first game to take place during the Korean War, but clarifies to be grabbing more information in the coming weeks.
Most interesting about the claim is if the new project will be sufficient without studio co-founders Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey.
