Reflecting on the Xbox One generation as a whole, it is understandable that Microsoft and its player base wants to forget what happened during its time in the 8th console generation. But, some aspects of the era continues to bring good value to players not only on Xbox, but PC as well. In that, I’m speaking about Sea of Thieves. Just this past fall it was revealed that more than 25 million players entered the Sea of Thieves. Additionally, 5 million purchased the game on Steam.
What really shines most about Sea of Thieves and illustrates its continued success is the content it delivers. While the original launch was a very grim moment for the game and Xbox as a whole, the game now presents a fruitful and rewarding experience. More so with Season 5 that arrived previously, players were welcomed to a greater quality of life influx.
Looking ahead, Rare shares the roadmap for Sea of Thieves including how content will be structured alongside more promised additions slated well into late 2022 this year.
With Seasonal updates still forming the skeleton for Sea of Thieves, one of our main goals for 2022 is to flesh out our pirate world and make it feel more dynamic. Stories, whether they’re the ones we tell or those that our players create themselves, are at the very heart of Sea of Thieves, so we want to inspire new tales of derring-do and comradery.
Enter Adventures and Mysteries: these story-focused events are designed to complement Seasons, providing regular narrative-driven content for players to dig into alongside the other gameplay features brought in by our Seasonal content drops. Adventures are time-limited, arriving on a roughly monthly schedule and running for 2-3 weeks, with each one forming a chapter within an overarching narrative. Accompanying cinematics will help set up the story, and a finale Adventure will cap off each narrative arc.

In terms of what to expect, February 17th will welcome ‘Shrouded Islands’, the first Adventure for Sea of Thieves. But regarding the light information on how Mysteries will be executed, the team at Rare did speak lightly on how murder stories and lost at sea tales influenced the project for more add-ons coming to the game.
More specifically in terms of tangible content, Sea Forts are making its debut for Sea of Thieves. These new points of interest will feature six locations overrunned by Phantoms asking for local pirates to regain these areas from the undead in the Sea of the Damned. Rare also speaks on the matters of unique experiences for Pirate Legends that mastered the Sea of Thieves.

But, a fan-favorite mode is being shown the door with this new path of content for the game. Rare explains that Season 6 will introduce the end for Arenas mode in Sea of Thieves. “Along with this exciting new content, we as a team are working hard to implement feedback on some of the community’s hot button topics, devoting as many resources as we can to improve features that matter most to the players.
“However, shifting the focus fully onto making Adventure mode the best it can be means that we do have to make difficult decisions elsewhere. So, after lengthy internal discussions, we have made the tough call to close down Sea of Thieves’ Arena mode within the next few months.” What are you most interest about the new lineup of add-ons planned for Sea of Thieves?
