For many, Shenmue has remained a stepping stone for video games when it came to the time it was released. The series brought storytelling to a new standard as it featured a full-lenght experience in 3D on the Sega Dreamcast and the same can be said for its sequel, Shenmue II. But came 2019, the long-awaited Shenmue III officially arrived to PlayStation & PC.

But, what could come next for the series? In August 2020, it was rumored a new Shenmue-related announcement would be made and many went on to speculate the next installment is on the horizon for the IP. But, it was Crunchyroll which announced the series will be adapted into an anime series.

By February 2022, season 1 for Shenmue The Animation officially arrived. But for a second season, the show has met an early demise. According to a statement on Twitter by Toonami co-creator Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco, the series is halting any effort for more release.

The reveal comes to be part of the initiative executed from the Warner Discovery merger which has cut significant animated projects already. The latest move alongside Shenmue also severs Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Fena: Pirate Princess, Lazor Wulf, and Tigtone as well. DeMarco did state the first season showed enough success for a second, but could not answer for the decision to cut momentum so soon.

As for other relevant Crunchyroll news in recent time, the streaming service finally made its way to Nintendo Switch. Back in February, the subscription released official support for the Nintendo handheld hybrid console which is still far few from what is also available on other platforms.
