Exploring what large platform holders can do to independent game studios, Microsoft has illustrated to be structured effectively for these developers. Before, we saw teams were able to access developers kits for hardware remotely via xCloud in the past. But the firm previously enabled this access to indie developers which has been live already for roughly a year. Sony Interactive Entertainment is a different story.
Although the firm has maintained stability with some teams and publishers, there is a massive deficit in how the company interacts with these smaller operations. In a collective report made last summer, developers listed the number of obstacles and inefficiencies of being a small studio and working with the PlayStation firm for an upcoming game.
This week, Sony Interactive Entertainment in a new press release tells that it’s forming a new program titled ‘PlayStation Indies’ which will loan PlayStation 5 hardware to small independent developers with an SDK and play kit as well.
It is our continued goal to make PlayStation the best place to publish and play games of all shapes and sizes. Over the past couple of years, we have been thrilled to support our external publishing partners with features in Indie Spotlight events, indie montage videos on our social channels, dedicated space for PlayStation Indies on PlayStation.com, and have been working to reduce the time it takes to get a new developer on-boarded on PlayStation.
“As such, we are always striving to lower the barrier of entry and improve the process for publishing on PlayStation. We’re pleased to announce a new initiative that will make it easier for new partners to hop in and get started with developing for PlayStation,” the press release goes on to read.
“Newly licensed PlayStation game publishers and developers will be eligible to receive one PS5 development kit and one PS5 testing kit, compliments of SIE subject to applicable terms and conditions.” The registry for the program lists that India, Ukraine, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, Uruguay, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Vietnam are the only regions not eligible for the PlayStation Indies.
