Sony Files Trademark For Sunset Overdrive In The U.S.

While Insomniac Games mainly holds true to the PlayStation platform in regards to most of its releases in the past two decades, the game studio last console lifecycle did happen to introduce an Xbox exclusive. In 2014, Sunset Overdrive arrived to Xbox One and still stands to be one of the freshest entries from the team alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man and the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.

It was in summer 2019 that Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the official purchase for the game studio. While the firm is now to work exclusively for the PlayStation company moving forward, the plans for Sunset Overdrive is still left undetermined. That was until a new report emerged revealing Sony Interactive Entertainment acquiring ownership for the property as well.

And while the one game series still sits in purgatory, assumingly, Sony Interactive Entertainment on Tuesday reveals to file a trademark for the franchise. Noted, insomniac Games owns the property, but Sony Interactive Entertainment did make the recent filing.

Of course, the most accurate classification for the trademark reads “computer game software”. But, there are also a handful of other classifications filed domestically as well: “Electrical Apparatus, Machines and Supplies”, “Cutlery, Machinery, Tools and Parts Thereof”, “Measuring and Scientific Appliances”, “Musical Instruments and Supplies”, and “Prints and Publications”.

Although the trademark does give fans some assurance on the future of Sunset Overdrive, it does not solidify a new game is one the way. Perhaps it is to further establish Sony’s ownership for the license and nothing more. So for now, keep your expectations tempered.

What is exciting for the future of Insomniac Games is the return of one veteran developer. In February, Drew Murray shared to be departing from Xbox Game Studios’ The Initiative. But, the same month Murray announced to be returning to Insomniac Games as a Principal Designer. You can read the full report by heading here.
