The rich universes of FromSoftware and other Kadokawa-owned franchises has remained a staple in Japan and has also been recognized as such globally. However, Sony has shown more & more interest for the firm in recent years. Previously in 2021, the PlayStation firm announced it’s investing a minor stake into Kadokawa to further invest into the company.
But, it wasn’t until this past fall that word broke on a potential acquisition. From Reuters, Sony is eager for a buyout and sources familiar told that it would be completed by the following weeks. At the end of November 2024, Kadokawa did share in a statement that it is interested in a potential acquisition from Sony. In December, a ‘Strategic Capital and Business Alliance’ was formed between both parties.
As a byproduct of this new partnership, Sony is to invest more resources into Kadokawa and this includes its gaming efforts as well. As per its recent earnings report, Sony is to help fund live-action & television series for Kadokawa-owned properties. “Global adaptations and distribution by Sony Group of the Company’s IP into live-action films and drama series,” the filing reads.
Also, both anime & books are also included in this arrangement. “Further expansion of global distribution by Sony Group of the Company’s animated works and anime related products. Distribution of the Company’s publications, including manga, as e-books by the Sony Group.” Currently, it is unclear what IPs Sony will be approaching Kadokawa to be adapting first.
Similarly, Sony Pictures has collaborated with other publishers to produce live-action films. The most recent example is with Nintendo as the two established a new effort to create a live-action adaption for The Legend of Zelda. You can read the full report by heading here.
