Developer Firaxis Games regarding the currently ongoing XCOM series has been quiet since the initial release of the XCOM 2: War of the Chosen expansion since the add-on experience released earlier on in 2017. However, regarding future releases for the franchise, it is uncertain what direction the team plans to take the series next. Assuming perhaps another expansion or the next mainline installment for overall XCOM, that is what fans are left to speculate for the time being.

Now in a sudden announcement made today, Firaxis Games emerges to disclose that the next launch for XCOM will instead be a spin-off entry, titled Chimera Squad. You can watch the full announcement trailer in the video below:

The turn-based, tactical combat series with the newest release scheduled to arrive in just less than two weeks will offer players the ability to construct their own squads to take on missions through a lineage of different objectives and settings. “Deploy your custom team of human and alien agents to defend Earth’s fragile, newfound peace.

“Lead Chimera Squad through a new experience that innovates on XCOM’s turn-based legacy, utilizing strategy, teamwork, and new breach-and-clear gameplay to complete your mission objectives,” synapse for the game reads on the official website. In the full experience, players are equipped up to eleven different agents to designate for their own organized Chimera Squad. With said team, you can equip each agent with ‘specialized and complementary classes’ to ring in the most success for each mission.

Unlike previous XCOM titles, Chimera Squad also introduces Breach mode which allows players to enter battle in a strategic and effective manner. Firaxis Games also debuts interleaved turns which offers an alternate set of turns for selected agents and enemies to offer more potential outcomes solely based on the premise of your decided turn.

Elsewhere for XCOM, 2K announced during the latest Indie World presentation that the XCOM 2 Collection alongside respected bundles for Borderlands and Bioshock will be arriving to Nintendo Switch. You can catch up on the full announcement by heading here.

Are you excited to play the next XCOM title later this month?

XCOM: Chimera Squad arrives to PC on April 24, 2020.
