Sunset Overdrive Director Says He “Would Love To Return” To The Series In Recent Interview

Since late 2014, many still question the reality that is Insomniac Games developing a Xbox One exclusive title, Sunset Overdrive. Despite the performance of the platform, Microsoft’s machine did not tamper with the execution of the release as many that got their hands on the game left satisfied. But with Microsoft’s reach to PC with its software library, Sunset Overdrive eventually came to the platform as well.

But in summer of 2019, developer Insomniac Games was officially acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Now a PlayStation first-party studio, fans of Sunset Overdrive grew worried to how the future will roll out for the game. But, Sony Interactive Entertainment later went on to press that the Sunset Overdrive IP is its jurisdiction as well.

But what many are surely gravitated to now is if a sequel will arrive in the coming future. One thing for certain is that the game is not in development. But, Insomniac Games does press it is interested to return to the Sunset Overdrive universe when speaking to GQ.

I mean, never say never is my approach. Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future. I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game.

Marcus Smith, Insomniac Games Creative Director

Although Insomniac Games leadership is interested to certainly return to the series, it does not cement a follow-up is on the way. Noted, Insomniac Games does acknowledge that the developer owns the property, not Sony Interactive Entertainment. While Sony claims to own the property, that is only by extension for purchasing the developer.

So if a second game materialized, more platforms are possibly on the roadmap since it was never on PlayStation to begin with. As for what is to come, many are questioning the recent filed trademark for Sunset Overdrive. In that, Sony Interactive Entertainment made the filing for the IP which suggests a potential release for PlayStation at the very least. You can read the full report by heading here.
