Ever since the initial statement from Team Sonic lead Takashi Iizuka back at E3 2019, fans continued to be on their toes regarding the next major entry in the series. “The next big year for Sonic is 2021. That’s the 30-year anniversary for Sonic. We are now preparing.” It wasn’t until last year that it was discovered Sega’s extended plans for the series’ 30th anniversary that more was to take place in 2021.
In recent weeks, there happened to be a spike in excitement for a potential announcement to take place. Back in March, it appeared that Sega Europe was highlighting an unveiling to be held on March 18. However, one employee went on to clarify that there is no plans for a showing at the time. But, Sega executive vice-president of game content and services Shuji Utsumi in the latest earnings call hinted at an announcement to take place soon for Sonic the Hedgehog.
From Team Sonic on Tuesday, the publisher announced on Twitter that the developer will be holding a ‘Sonic Central’ showcase which will reveal its celebratory plans for the series 30-year birthday and more beyond just a new game it appears.

Regarding the plans outside of the new game, one potential candidate is the upcoming Netflix show that is underway over at Netflix. Originally leaked back in December, Sega & Netflix finally shared the announcement in 2021. Titled Sonic Prime, it is told to be a 3D animated series with a scheduled release aimed for 2022 next year.
As for other teases that Team Sonic conjured for this week’s presentation, the developer uploaded an ‘Unstoppable’ trailer on YouTube. Most excitingly, the studio sounds to hire Roger Craig Smith to commentate for the video despite him resigning from the role of Sonic the Hedgehog for more than a decade of voice acting.
