Developer Red Barrels – most known for its work on the Outlast series – has been quietly tuning its latest project for nearly a handful of years. Although the developer shipped the second entry all the way back in 2017, a multiplayer spin-off dubbed ‘The Outlast Trials’ was revealed in 2019. Since then, the team has shared little on the new project aside from its Cold War setting and emphasis on shared experiences with players online.
Previously, the game did share a release window was slated for last year in 2022. However, it was not until August that it was revealed only a closed beta for the game would be shipping that fall. Despite that, it did offer eager player hands-on time with the game to understand the directing the series is heading with how much time has passed since Outlast 2’s launch.
Now recently, Red Barrels has revealed The Outlast Trials is set to ship in an Early Access for on PC later this spring. You can watch a new announcement trailer in the video below:
“The Closed Beta was just a taste of what’s to come in The Outlast Trials. Our first round of willing participants to take part in the trials provided us with some insightful feedback and very interesting data, which we have used to improve the experience.“We received so many requests for the Closed Beta that we’re looking forward to welcoming even more players to The Outlast Trials when it comes to Early Access,” Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin says.
“Set in the height of the Cold War era, players take on the role of test subjects abducted by the shadowy Murkoff Corporation. Imprisoned in a secret Murkoff facility, players will be thrust into a series of physical and mental ordeals, tormented by iconic characters, and challenged alone or in teams to survive with their sanity intact,” the game’s synopsis reads.
