Unlike Xbox Backwards Compatibility, The New PlayStation Plus Is To Introduce Trophy System For Legacy Games

For the past generation, Microsoft has pioneered widespread support for its ongoing campaign for backwards compatibility of legacy hardware. While consoles are pushed aside for the next, those titles can still be played on the newest device. Even Xbox head Phil Spencer advocates for the industry to embrace legal emulation of its older releases to preserve turning stone releases of respected hardware.

However, Microsoft appears to be stepping away from this as of November. In that, the firm has revealed it will halt further additions to the program when featuring more than 70 titles to the library back during its 20th anniversary. Additionally, the firm also introduced FPS Boost for legacy games & xCloud at the time which has yet to receive a new lineup.

Now, Sony Interactive Entertainment is expanding its lineup with the new PlayStation Plus tiers which incorporates legacy titles from across all older hardware. Although this is behind a paywall – and includes streaming for a selection of titles – this is a first step for the firm. This week it was revealed it is going further than Xbox with trophies being included for select legacy titles now.

Yes, you read that right. From developer Bend Studio, the team is preparing workable and unlockable trophies for Syphon Filter. In the thread, the team even writes “you can earn the platinum too”. As of reporting, this is the only game to feature this. However, it is best to presume most PlayStation exclusive title will incorporate this feature.

Elsewhere this week, Sony Interactive Entertainment featured a compiled list of all the games that will be included in the Extra/Premium tiers for PlayStation Plus. This list features more than 100+ games and is to increase by the launch of the updated service. You can read the full report by heading here.
