Upcoming Cloud Service Underway By Sony Is To Be Exclusive To PlayStation, CEO Jim Ryan Shares

Clearly in the race for cloud streaming dominance Sony Interactive Entertainment is one surprisingly not actively offering its plans for the pursuit. While Microsoft, Google, and Amazon offer their own alternatives, the PlayStation company is not ready to be transparent on its coming project. But, that is not to say that the firm is not pursuing to develop its own cloud ecosystem.

Noted, the firm did establish an agreement with Microsoft to receive its Azure technology in favor for Sony-manufactured semiconductors back in 2019. But what is more interesting is that the Japanese company was later confirmed to initiate the partnership by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Despite the dormant response to Stadia or xCloud, Sony is urgent to enter the cloud market for a couple of years now.

Further explaining its stance with cloud streaming and PlayStation, Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan when speaking to Nikkie explains that the plan is to solely incorporate PlayStation uniquely, Video Game Chronicles translates & transcribes.

We’re still having conversations with [Microsoft] about exchanging ideas. We’re still talking to them about exchanging ideas, and there’s some very interesting stuff, so when the time is right, we’ll announce our cloud strategy. We could conceivably use the cloud for our technical infrastructure, but the cloud gaming experience we’re offering will be unique and only on PlayStation.

Further on in the interview, Ryan commented to be unsure how impactful the cloud platform will affect the performance of the next PlayStation console. “It’s hard to answer that question right now, but history shows that sales peak in the third or fourth year. At the end of the cycle, the cloud may play some role. I’m more optimistic about the future than I was a year ago.

“We have just released PS5, so at this point it’s time to learn how people are enjoying it, and then we’ll take the time to think about the future of PlayStation.” Although there has still yet to be any concrete foundation for PlayStation cloud platform, its is suggested that whatever it is happens to be the “counterpunch” that was previously reported for Sony’s ambitions.

Recently, it was gathered that the first sign for Sony’s push against Xbox Game Pass soft launched in Poland. That being the PlayStation Plus Video Pass, it offers a selection of television and films for regular PlayStation Plus subscribers. You can read the full report by heading here.
