Tracking back to 2018, it was initially reported that Valve was developing an in-house virtual reality headset despite already being associated with the HTC Vive on their online storefront, Steam. Amid that report, the claim also disclosed that firm was also planning to release a Half-Life title to support forthcoming sales of the then-unnamed peripheral.
Now settled into 2020, we are well aware of the Valve Index as the headset finally debuted this past may. Even more, that unannounced Half-Life project was also revealed to be Half-Life: Alyx, a prequel telling the story of the titular character prior to the events of Half-Life 2 exclusively in a virtual reality experience. At the time, it was unexpected for the company to illustrate how Valve would meet margins in contrast of Oculus or Sony regarding sales per unit.
Now in review for the last financial quarter of 2019, Valve did surprising well leading in 2020. Reported by SuperData Research, it was shared that the Valve Index sold more than double the amount of units this fall as a whopping 109 thousand were recorded for the valve Index. The research firm suggest that this is primarily due to the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx which took place during the financial quarter.
Accumulating sales from Q419 atop of overall units sold for this fiscal year, Valve Index has already reached roughly 150 thousand sold in its first half year alone. Which does come off as an abrupt surprise seeing that the price tag for the Index ranks pretty close to $1,000 if you decide on purchasing the entire package. Granted, Valve Index does support controllers for HTC Vive, so sales figures when released might not reflect overall units purchased assumably.
While the Valve Index does not top the charts in comparison to the juggernaut PlayStation VR or Oculus Quest, it does outrun both Oculus Go and Rift S thanks to this sudden boost from software anticipation. If not in part from the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx, the Index would most likely not be listed on the list provided.
Did you pick up Valve Index for Half-Life: Alyx?
Half-Life: Alyx I scheduled to release in March 2020.
