Establishing Xbox in a specific market like Japan has and remains to be an issue for Microsoft for nearly two decades. Although the firm has some standing in delivering its platforms previously, Xbox remains outperformed compared its competitors that play for the home team over in the Eastern Hemisphere. Noted, there is a room for entry with the previously acquired Tango Gameworks which division lead Phil Spencer adamantly shows excitement to advance with.
For the transition of the Xbox Series X & Xbox Series S, the industry witnessed a surprising surge in purchases for the newest Xbox generation. Ahead of the first full year of release, Japan was recorded to have sold roughly 100,000 units. The same achievement took Xbox One three years to exceed. But, now Xbox One has reportedly been outsold in lifetime sales officially now.
From a weekly sales report by Famitsu, Xbox Series X|S has now overtaken 150,000 in sales. Respectively, the Xbox Series X sold 1,936 units and Xbox Series S selling 2,863 units making a total of 4,799 consoles in total. Combined with the already sold 84,329 of Xbox Series X & 68,449 of Xbox Series S tallies 152,778 units altogether. In total for Xbox One, it only achieved 120,000 in lifetime sales according to VGChartz.
As for Microsoft’s continued pursuit to further hold a presence in Japan, Spencer also spoke on the endeavor to bring more talent to its platform. At the Tokyo Game Show last fall, he explained an extended desire to establish more partners for Xbox. Already, there are said to be more than a hundred teams that made an arrangement with Xbox Game Pass.
However, outright acquiring more talent is another story. From industry consultant Dr. Serkan Toto, he explained that Microsoft’s attempt to purchase a Japan native game studio is not any likelihood in to become a reality. “A foreign entity taking over a publicly traded studio against its own will would be a suicide mission: everybody would leave instantly,” he summarized.
