While Microsoft is primarily marketing the next-generation of console hardware with the Xbox Series X to be the suggested unit when transitioning from the Xbox One, players do have a second option. Of course, it is the Xbox Series S. But while the system is only one third of the teraflop count in the GPU of its sibling console, Microsoft emphasizes that potential users should keep the device in consideration.
Given the size of the unit alongside the pricing for only $299, it is almost unrealistic how the Xbox Series S is even one of two next-generation systems. However, there are some drawbacks for purchasing the console. One is being that backwards compatible titles will not receive the same 4K enhancements as already available on Xbox One X.
Despite that, Microsoft has emphasized that the system while lacking graphically can still offer players extensive horsepower in contrast to current-generation systems. In that, the firm promises “double framerates” are possible on Xbox Series S. But there are other benefits that can be found for the entry-level unit.
When speaking to Kotaku in a recent interview, Xbox lead Phil Spencer tells that the Xbox Series S can load some games fasted due primarily to the lower resolutions rendered for the respected game.
I’m not worried. I think we have proof points, like we’ve said, on PC, that show that you can get absolutely amazing-looking games on great hardware and have those games scale to the hardware capability.
For more evidence suggesting the possibilities of the Xbox Series S’ potential, look no further than Tomas Sala’s The Falconeer. Upon the game’s release date reveal for this November, the developer does clarify that the game is capable of performing at 120 frames per second on both the Xbox Series X as expected alongside the Xbox Series S also.
In relevance to the system’s respect from Microsoft, the firm is anticipating the console to outperform its sibling Xbox Series X commercially in the long term. Spencer relays that the unit’s price tag is enough to suggest many consumers will not argue picking up an Xbox as well as those looking to enter the Xbox ecosystem without a hardened commitment.
