Xbox Series X Is The First Console To Offer Dolby Atmos Audio Support At Launch, Dolby Vision Slated To Hit In 2021

Atop of the already gargantuan news drop surrounding the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S both slated to launch later this November, there also happens to be additional features that will be available for the next-generation units as well. Granted that Microsoft has been very generous enough to provide more revolutionary approaches to how gaming is provided with a revamped backwards compatibility algorithm and Smart Delivery for those transitioning over, there is still more to unravel.

That being how games are experienced for players looking to break the sound barrier with extreme detail to not just the resolution, but how HDR technology is operated on top of the audio being relayed alongside. In that, Dolby announces its coming project Dolby Atmos will be shipping support for Xbox Series X/Series S when the hardware arrives later in the fall.

The self-named Atmos project is shared to implement audible actions into the third dimension by layering immersive and malleable technology to adapt to scenarios in-game. In a sense, you can see this as raytracing for sound which assists in projection sound to be more in touch with real-time.

A leap beyond surround sound, Dolby Atmos puts you in the middle of the action by precisely placing each sound all around you in three-dimensional space, so you can quickly pinpoint its location in the game — before it’s too late.

Not only that, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are also told to be inaugurated for the release of Dolby Vision as well sometime next year in 2021. The feature alike Dolby Atmos will emphasize on realistic light work expanding on HDR technology. The firm pins the project to offer 40 times brighter highlights, 10 times deeper black levels, and support 12-bit color cepth as well for more dramatic imagery.

Dolby lists a handful of properties already implementing its technology (Atmos) for the new Xbox units: Call of Duty Warzone, Cyberpunk 2077, F1 2020, Gears 5, and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Elsewhere this month, Microsoft also shared a listen at its own in-house 3D audio initiative, Project Triton. You can read the full report by heading here.
