While originally undetermined when Apex Legends ‘Arenas’ mode will be coming to the popular battle royale, many questioned exactly how it would be implemented for the ongoing title. With whispers of a 3v3 matchmaking experience with a sprinkle of a round-based economy, it was building up to be exactly what the Titanfall spin-off needed.

Officially arriving with the simultaneous release of Season 9 ‘Legacy’ and new Legend Valkyrie, players grow even more excited as to what is entailed for the new mode. Alike with how Respawn Entertainment handles the regular battle royale, it is anticipated that variants of Arenas is to follow later on.

Although there is no specific plans outside of Ranked Arenas currently, the developer during a recent Apex Legends AMA on Reddit told that there was once a bomb defuse mode that did not shine as the studio would have hoped.

For the future of Arenas, the first thing on the table is Ranked Arenas. Can’t talk about when that’s coming out but know that it’s a top priority for us. Funny story about bomb mode:

We definitely playtested a bomb mode early in Arenas development! It was… not as good as you think it would be… it creates a weird situation where you start looking at characters in context of the objective and it really exposes how many of the characters aren’t built for a bomb mode. At the end of the day, it was really important for Arenas that character abilities feel valuable. Now I get that not EVERY ability is valuable in Arenas, but 90% is way better than 25%.

Carlos Pineda, Apex Legends Lead Game Designer

Although the bomb defuse mode never made it to the final release of Arenas or to be savored for a later event or limited-time mode, the reveal does happen to entertain that Respawn Entertainment uses its experiences when working to better later additions to Apex Legends. As for other promises, Pineda also remarked on implementing penalties for early quitters for Arenas on Twitter this week as well.

Outside of the studio for Apex Legends, publisher Electronic Arts pressed that the battle royale has now profited more than $1 billion. The game is told to witness the highest influx of players  since the launch of the game in February 2019. You can read the full report by heading here.
