Amid Potential Closure for Development, System Shock 3 Finds New Home Under Tencent

Touching back to February, reports emerged suggesting that Otherside Entertainment alongside the two decade-long wait for the third installment of System Shock might not be a reality as the studio was said to be deteriorating from the inside. According to a tip from one employee at the team in Austin, Texas, several lead developers departed from the studio which illustrated a high likeliness that the team will be no more by the coming future.

Even more, Otherside Entertainment was also said to have severed its relationship with Starbreeze Studios. This happens to follow the successful restructuring of the Swedish firm back in December as the company shared to aim high for Payday 3 scheduled to ship sometime in 2022. So that also layers on for the demise of Otherside Entertainment.

However, despite the unlikliness of the studio keeping structure especially now during the current economic status, Otherside Entertainment has been reported to find a new company to lean on. Video Game Chronicles tells that domain ownership for both SystemShock3.com and SystemShock4.com are now in possession of Tencent Holdings.

The Chinese firm has shown time and time again to be in pursuit for more prominent teams to bring under its wing. And with the momentum established for System Shock 3, it’s evident enough to suggest the efforts to acquire the domains.

Most recently, we have witnessed the ways of Tencent’s ambitions with the previous capital investment injected into Bayonetta team PlatinumGames. The financial action transitioned the team to properly pursue being a fully independent studio. Likewise can be said for Yager Development as the team responsible for Spec Ops: The Line also received an investment from Tencent Holdings earlier this year; which you can read by heading here.
