For Magic the Gathering, the tabletop game after its phenomenon was planning to hit the video game industry with Magic: Legends. However, the project was effectively shuttered in 2021. Despite being of similar origin as a tabletop experience, Larian Studios more recently rolled out Baldur’s Gate 3 and is bringing record numbers on Steam and is anticipated to be one of the biggest releases for 2023.
But as for Magic the Gathering, the series despite it falling out to ship an MMO will instead be bringing video games to its respected platform. From the recent GenCon earlier this summer, the 2024 roadmap for Magic the Gathering will feature additions from Assassin’s Creed & Fallout. You can watch the recap video below:
“We’re excited to announce a new set of Commander Decks set in the universe of Fallout arriving next March,” senior product designer Athena Froelich shares. “These pre-constructed decks take players to post-nuclear, alternate reality world of Fallout. Gangs of blood-thirsty raiders; towering super mutants; irradiated monsters; deadly retro futuris robots rove the wasteland.
“Humanity has formed several factions striving for survival: from those locked away in pre-war vaults to new groups looking to rebuild society anew, this release of Commander Decks is a love letter to this iconic gaming franchise with each representing one of the wastelands many colorful factions represented in Magic form so you can recreate some of Fallout’s most famous and outlandish moments on the table with your friends.
The presentation continues by sharing an update on an ongoing collaboration with Ubisoft. Previously it was confirmed that Magic the Gathering/Wizards of the Coast will be teaming up with Ubisoft to feature a new addition to the game with Assassin’s Creed. Now, this partnership is prepared to release as part of the 2024 roadmap next year.
In July 2024, we’re releasing Beyond Boosters featuring Assassin’s Creed immersive, epic historical adventures. Every Assassin’s Creed game gets in on the fun. This is also the debut of the Beyond Boosters: a new kind of Booster features a beloved world. They aren’t draftable, but each Booster takes you on a journey unique to that universe.
Plug in directly to the animus with both new cards and exciting reprints featuring favorite characters and moments from the Assassin’s Creed Games. Aspiring Assassins can take their new skills to the deadliest formats including modern.
Furthermore, 2025 is plugged to be when players can expect Final Fantasy to also bridge into Magic the Gathering. “We’re excited to announce that the Final Fantasy is the next universes beyond tentpole Booster release coming in 2025. In collaboration with Square Enix, universes beyond will be bringing the beloved Final Fantasy series to Magic the Gathering as a tentpole Booster release in 2025.
“The Final Fantasy series known for its highly imaginative worlds, rich stories, and memorable characters. The set will encompass each main Final Fantasy game that has been released to date from the original Final Fantasy to the recently released Final Fantasy XVI. The set will also be available to play on Magic Arena.”
