It is no secret the cash cow that Assassin’s Creed is for Ubisoft. While there are valid complaints about the publisher, the one criticism that cannot be casted at the success of the IP. Previously, we saw highlights for the glowing launch of Assassin’s Creed Mirage then. Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla also performed similarly when compared to the prior Assassin’s Creed Odyssey as well.
Now looking ahead, there has been a different shift in Ubisoft’s confidence. With looming reports of a potential buyout, there is some tenseness that is emitting from the firm. With delays for the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows and even pulling the plug on media attention for a good chunk of 2024, it was clear that Ubisoft is concerned with the performance of its next release.
As per the publisher’s Q3 FY2024-25 earnings, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is tracking to have record pre-orders not seen for the series since the release of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey back in 2018. “Pre orders are tracking solidly, in line with those of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, the second most successful entry of the franchise,” CEO Yves Guillemot stated.
He continues: “I want to commend the incredible talent and dedication of the entire Assassin’s Creed’s team, who is working tirelessly to ensure that Shadows delivers on the promise of what is the franchise’s most ambitious entry yet.” Despite this new metric, Ubisoft did also report to be worse off than prior quarters. According to gamesindustry.biz, the firm decline in revenue by roughly 31 percent as of this new earnings filing.
Guillemot also comments on its ongoing restructure as well. “As a result of disciplined execution, we have announced further targeted restructurings, making difficult but necessary choices, and now expect to exceed our cost reduction objective by the end of FY25, ahead of schedule.” Part of this action did meet over 180 layoffs and a closure for one of its U.K. studios.
