When it comes to video game controllers, a draw to the peripheral still remains with touch screen controls and mouse & keyboard becoming more prevalent. As traditional consoles still sell, gamepads are preferable when playing on the couch. In this recent console generation, Sony Interactive Entertainment was the firm to truly push the envelope with its DualSense controller for PlayStation 5. However, Xbox remains in a static position.
While Microsoft has released more than a handful different color options alongside the return of Xbox Design Lab, the same cannot be said for the innovation for its controller. According to a recent rumor sourced from Xbox Era founder Nick Baker, the firm is working internally on an Xbox controller with DualSense-like features. But amid all that, ASUS is creating its own hallmark Xbox controller.
From CES this month, it is revealed that its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand is working on a new Xbox paddle with an OLED display on the face of the controller, the ROG Raikiri Pro . Even more, users can decorate it with custom animations or simply view the battery status. You can watch the segment from its CES 2023 presentation in the video below:
“The ROG Raikiri Pro PC Controller puts all the commands and customization options you need right into your hands. Personalize your Raikiri Pro with customizable animations, view status indicators, and switch profiles on its built-in OLED display,” reads the description on the controller’s official page.
“The four rear L/R buttons can be programmed as hotkeys for in-game commands or joystick sensitivity toggles. Tri-mode connectivity gives you the versatility to connect via Bluetooth®, 2.4 GHz RF, or wired USB-C ― making the Raikiri Pro perfect for gaming on PCs, laptops, or next-gen Xbox consoles.”
This is not the first instance a controller utilized an OLED screen. Even more, it is not the first seeing this practiced on an Xbox controller either. In that, Hyperkin back in 2018 approached this for the iconic ‘Duke’ controller for the original Xbox. A Halo: Combat Evolved model also came out for Xbpox’s 20th anniversary in 2021 as well designed after Cortana’s original appearance. You can read the full report by heading here.
