The state of Battlefield has remained a question for many fans of the series since the release of Battlefield 2042. While the initial reveal gave the impression of the ‘Return to Form’ for the IP, it has not stuck with players as they would hope. In fact, work has already begun on the next game. EA CEO Andrew Wilson expresses that the franchise will return in an “entirely new way” when time comes for the reveal.
However, it is still not understood the direction the series will follow. Previously, it was revealed that Marcus Lehto’s Ridgeline Games – the team actively working on the next single-player experience for Battlefield – was shuttered this February. But with post-launch support concluding on Battlefield 2042, it was revealed that EA Motive is now assisting in the work for the next flagship title.
But, legacy titles are getting the carpet pulled from underneath it. Earlier this month, it was revealed that more classic Battlefield titles are to be facing its official closure. According to the Online Shutdown Service board, three more titles from DICE is on the chopping block. In that, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline are all to shutter online servers on November 7th later this fall.
Noted, this does not affect the entirety for select titles. Battlefield 3 is still active on PC as well as Battlefield 4 & Battlefield Hardline for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Howbeit, it was inevitable this act would come. Last year, we witnessed this to other legacy DICE titles including Mirror’s Edge, Battlefield Bad Company 1 & 2, and even Battlefield 1943.
This is a continued trend with Electronic Arts. Other newsworthy mentions includes the severing of multiple titles from storefronts including Need For Speed Carbon, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and Need for Speed Undercover. You can read the full report by heading here.
