When it comes to The Witcher, fans are instantly excited whenever developer CD Projekt Red mentions the IP. It was already announced even before the release of Cyberpunk 2077 that a new installment is in development. It was in a later statement that the Polish game studio is forging a “New Saga” for The Witcher series altogether.

Most recently, CD Projekt Red mapped out its project playbook for the team with multiple titles in the development pipeline already. This includes a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 ‘Project Orion’ alongside two separate The Witcher games, Project Sirius & Project Canis Majoris. Additionally, the team also referenced Project Hadar which is an entirely new IP from CD Projekt Red at the time.

During a reveal on Wednesday, CD Projekt Red shares the full context on Project Canis Majoris – it is a complete remake for 2007’s The Witcher. The project is being helmed by Fool’s Theory (Seven) which also worked as a support team on Outriders, Divinity II: Original Sin, and Bauldur’s Gate.

The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger. Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games.

They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait.

Adam Badowski, CD Projekt Red Studio Head

“The Witcher Remake is what you might know by the codename “Canis Majoris”. It’s still early and we want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention to detail, therefore, while we’re excited to share the news with you, we want to ask you for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail,” the blog post goes on to elaborate with.

Similarly, this is yet another remake on the horizon. Previously, Ubisoft shared its pursuit to shape together a reworking for Splinter Cell with Ubisoft Toronto at the helm. Atop of that, Remedy Entertainment & Rockstar Games have collaborated on a remake for both Max Payne & Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. You can read the full report by heading here.
