Alike titles like Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem is another instance of a title that re-invented gaming with first-person shooters. And with the 1996 Duke Nukem 3D, the IP became one of the most notable entries for the time. However, the later 2012 Duke Nukem Forever left players with cold feet and the franchise has yet to make a direct return to the spotlight since.

In 2020, Gearbox Software did ship Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour allowing players to revisit the game which made the IP so popular. But, what’s next for the series? Well, President Randy Pitchford at PAX East 2022 told that there is a new project underway alongside Brothers in Arms as well, but there is no timeframe for when that will arrive.

This June, The Hollywood Reporter wrote a story sharing that a new film adaptation is in the works. However, this will not be the first attempt at ‘The King’ hitting the big screen. In fact, smaller studios dove for the IP alongside a deal involving Paramount Studios & John Cena with Gearbox was established and still fell through.

This time, Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are to produce the new picture with Legendary. Marla Studios’ Jean-Julien Baronnet (Assassin’s Creed) is involved alongside Counterbalance Entertainment which Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg are part of. Currently, there is no word for the individual who will pen the script, but the trio is searching for the right candidate for the position.

Gearbox Software is taking a different approach with Hollywood when it comes to film adaptations. For its coming Borderlands film with Lionsgate Films, the firm has elected Eli Roth (Hostel) to direct which shows to be a strategic decision alongside the inclusion of Arad Productions which has kickstarted the Marvel Studios lineage.

Are you excited for the Duke Nukem film on the way from the Cobra Kai creators?
