Although anticipation grew for Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding prior to the game’s November 2019 launch, the aftermath appeared to be questionable for how the game will perform in reference to other Sony Interactive Entertainment releases then. In that, the game did not reach the top 10 selling titles for that month at the time; for PlayStation exclusives, that is surely unheard of to say the least.

But, coming the following year, Kojima Productions deemed the game to be a success. At least, enough for more projects to continue rolling out from the Japanese developer. But, it was left unsure the direction the team would lead. Until that was the recent announcement for Death Stranding: Director’s Cut which is arriving this fall to PlayStation 5.

Although the titling is unfit for what comes with the game according to Hideo Kojima himself, the initial release proves to be a larger success now with the title selling over 5 million copies. Speaking with gamesindustry.biz, the team factors both PC & PlayStation sales to meet the new milestone.

With Death Stranding being the first title developed out of Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it has performed quite well. As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC.

Jay Boor, Kojima Productions’ Head of Publishing

Bleeding into what other possibilities is on the way for Kojima Productions points towards Xbox surprisingly. In a continued string of claims, GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb indicates that a partnered release with Microsoft is on the way. Grubb additionally added that the venture is to be part of the new exclusive releases on xCloud initiative. Recently, Grubb reported that Kojima himself signed a letter of intent with Microsoft to deliver a unique experience for Microsoft.

Previously, it was disclosed by Kojima Productions that the firm is leaning towards other projects including some outside of video games. In that, the game studio spared details on film, anime, and even manga. You can read the full report by heading here.
