Before we understood the shift in video game film adaptations were here from mediocre to decently watchable, it was always a questionable investment in whether it was a viable financial decision in creating these pictures. In 2019, Detective Pikachu changed that narrative. And with a fairly decent box office response and critically acceptable performance for a film based off of a video game, more was expected from this potential series.

Shortly before hitting theaters, reports circulated that a sequel was already being written for Detective Pikachu. However, as time progressed, little was said on the follow-up to the original film. By 2021, star Justice Smith shedded doubts that a sequel was in the works since no statement was given to him on returning. Even director Rob Letterman is gone with his new effort at Netflix for an Beyond Good & Evil movie in the works.

According to Deadline, there is an update on the matter. In that, a director is said to be closing in on a deal for the long-waited sequel as Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is said to be negotiating on the second Detective Pikachu film. It is confirmed that the original written story by Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) will be scrapped with a new telling penned by Legendary Pictures’ Chris Galletta (The Kings of Summer).

Additionally, while the new film is said to be a direct sequel, there is some unexpected wording from sources familiar with the production. Ryan Reynolds who starred and voiced the private investigator Pokémon is said to be involved to some degree, but not in terms of a starring role. But rather a minor character instead for the Krisel picture.

As for other Nintendo properties on the way for the silver screen, it is difficult to not know The Super Mario Bros. movie is on the way for its box office release this April. In fact, Illumination & Nintendo announced an earlier release slated two days ahead for April 5th just recently. You can read the full report by heading here.

Are you hoping a second Detective Pikachu movie comes?
