While publisher Square Enix is preparing the highly-anticipated release for Final Fantasy XVI next summer, the firm is also working with Luminous Productions on a similar, AAA budget project as well. From those that recall the announcement predating back to summer 2020, Project Athia – now Forspoken – is on the way. Originally, the game was slated to release this calendar year.
During the initial heat of the PlayStation 5 release, a CES promo shared the release date scheduled for January. However, that was not entirely accurate. A later gameplay trailer scheduled the game’s release for a spring 2022 release window. It was not until The Game Awards did Square Enix give the game a May launch date.
But, Luminous Productions made a follow-up later shifting the release to October this fall. But in a much recent statement, that date has once again been moved. This time the game is now aiming to release in January 2023. You can read the letterhead below:
“As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24, 2023. All game elements are now complete, and development is in its final polishing phase,” the developer writes in the letterhead revealing the new launch scheduled for next year.
Currently, the game is scheduled to launch for PlayStation 5 and PC. However, more platforms is on the horizon down the road. When that will be is another story. From one discovery in a trailer for then-Project Athia, it was disclosed that the game will be a timed exclusive for two years. So Xbox Series owners will be out of the picture until 2025 at the earliest. You can read the full report by heading here.
