GameStop Launches New ‘Retro’ Initiative Bringing Classic Games To Select Stores

At GameStop, the video game retailer still remains amid the foreseen downfall of physical media. With the climbing demand in digital purchases, the brick & mortar storefront remains even after the hit during the 2020 pandemic. Over the course of the past few years, the firm has readjusted its reach for more consumers. On its website, the retailer started carrying PC components to offer incentive to a different market.

Additionally, the board of directors also enlisted an industry leader as well. Former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime stood representing GameStop. That was until his departure in 2021. What’s more, the company also faced notoriety thanks to the Stock Market shorting for the company which led to the biopic film ‘Dumb Money’ that hit theaters in 2023.

Now in a new move from GameStop, years later after removing legacy games from its store shelves – GameStop is reintroducing classic games to select stores as part of its new ‘Retro’ initiative. You can read the full list of featured platforms in the list below:

Dreamcast
Game Boy
Game Boy Advance
Nintendo 64
Nintendo GameCube
Nintendo DS
Nintendo Entertainment System
PlayStation
PlayStation 2
PlayStation 3
Sega Genesis
Sega Saturn
Super Nintendo Entertainment System
Wii
Wii U
Xbox
Xbox 360

“The classics are back. New Retro GameStops are now spawning near you,” the announcement post on X reads from the official GameStop account. This reveal was also accompanied by a new unique store locator which assists in sharing what stores will be participating in the new GameStop Retro effort. There is no word on if more stores will be added at a later date.

What’s more interesting is that the website only elaborates on buying games in-store. “Visit a GameStop Retro location to shop fan-favorite games for history’s greatest consoles!” the page reads. However, it does not indicate if these participating retailers will also carry the retro machines for this new initiative and only available online.
