In anticipation for Gears 5 arriving with supported enhancements for the then-arriving Xbox Series X|S, developer The Coalition disclosed new details on coming content for the 2019 sequel. Unlike previous updates and Tour of Duties that released since the title’s inception, the Canadian studio revealed this add-on will strictly be a story expansion of sorts to add context to those outside of the game’s main cast of characters.
In that, Team Scorpio of Gears 5: Escape would star in the coming story DLC. While the three already are prominent roles in the game mode uniquely, Keegan, Lahni, and Mac were not fully represented to elaborate on the lore within the universe currently. But now that changes as the trio takes on a campaign of their own as they take on a new mission to halt the Swarm’s latest ambitions on capturing all of Sera.
Then scheduled to release sometime in December, the developer in a new blog post and trailer announces the game is set to arrive next Tuesday. You can watch the new Gears 5: Hivebusters trailer in the video below:
“In the new expansion, play as Lahni, Keegan and Mac – the heroes introduced in Gears 5’s Escape mode – in their first mission as part of the secretive Hivebuster program,” Zoe Curnoe, The Coalition Production Director writes for the expansion’s synopsis. “Thrown together and dubbed “Scorpio Squad,” their suicide mission to destroy a Swarm hive may hold the key to saving Sera and their own redemption.”
A fun fact that The Coalition presses on Hivebusters is that it not only is derived from Gears 5: Escape, but that it also is taken directly from the same-named comic book series written by Kurtis Wiebe, Gears 5: Hivebusters. The full five-part comic is out now for purchase which will reward owners with a ‘Mechanic Mac Character Skin’ and ‘Hivebusters Comic Cover Banner’.
