In terms of the direction that developer NetherRealm Studios is heading, the game studio continues to move its way into entertainment. We cannot say this is anything new since the team predating back to the mid ‘90s was involved with film during the initial theatrical release of Mortal Kombat. But, in the last couple of years did fans witness different takes of NetherRealm Studios titles being adapted to film.
For one, the firm was involved with Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge which arrived in 2020 last year. Atop of that, many surely did not miss the new Mortal Kombat live-action movie that arrived earlier this April as it hit theaters and HBO Max then. But the venture continues outside of Mortal Kombat. In one discovery in the bonus list for Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two a hint for an animated film based on Injustice: Gods Among Us was found.
Now in a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. officially announced the production to be on the way. While only providing a single frame from the animated film (above) you can expect the project to release later this fall as the provided release window. You can view the cast list below:

Additionally, the plot is told to be based on the plot from both the titular video game adaptation and Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One comic series written by Tom Taylor. “The story takes place on an alternate Earth where the Joker has tricked Superman into killing Lois Lane, sending the hero on a rampage. This unnhinged Superman decides to take control of Earth for its own good, leading Batman and his allies to attempt to stop him,” reads the overview from The Hollywood Reporter.
For what is comprised of the team working on the animated film, many from other Warner Bros. Animation productions are involved. Rick Morales (Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge) to produce, Matt Peters (Justice League Dark) to direct, and Ernie Altbecker (Batman: Hush) to pen the script.
Previously, another Warner Bros. Animation production was announced involving NetherRealm Studios – Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle for the Realms. The animated sequel is told to be arriving in late August. You can read the full report by heading here.
