Media Molecule Shares Support For Dreams To Officially Shutter

Developer Media Molecule for a remote number of years has been supporting its ongoing community-focused title Dreams. Releasing back in February 2020, the game was expected to explore new territories as players conjured new experiences with the new tools at their disposal. However, it was gathered the team would support the game for many years to come.

In one hint from Eurogamer’s Tom Phillips, it was understood that a PC port was on the way. The project was propped up for a dedicated version at the same time of claims lingering for Horizon Zero Dawn – which inevitably released. Additionally, a report from Kotaku also expressed eagerness from Media Molecule to branch out from just PlayStation also.

From a new blog post on the official Dreams website, the game is to slowly dismantle itself with the project to officially shutter come this fall.

As we continue to evaluate and evolve our priorities for the studio and Dreams, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue live support for Dreams after 1st September, 2023 to shift our focus to an exciting new project. You’ll continue to be able to play, create and share Dreams with others after September, but we won’t be releasing any more updates to the game or events such as DreamsCom, All Hallows’ Dreams or the Impy Awards.

We’re incredibly proud of the work we’ve done in developing Dreams – such as our content releases, Create updates and live events – and we are endlessly grateful to the community for their belief and continuous contributions since launch. Although this is challenging news we do have a few more updates on the way, including the much anticipated Tren, and a significant improvement to animation and our last Create mode update.

“We will continue to share and celebrate creations in Dreams with the wider world on our social channels, our streams, Impsider roundups and more. We will be continuing our in-game curation work to make sure the Dreamiverse feels as alive as it always has been, and to surface amazing creations from you, our community, for everyone to enjoy,” the post adds.

“We know this won’t be an easy message for everyone to hear, and it’s certainly not been an easy decision – Dreams has been a special project for Media Molecule and helping this burgeoning community of game developers, tinkerers, creatives, collaborators and dreamers grow and express themselves remains one of the best things we’ve ever done. Thank you for being part of it with us – we look forward to you joining us on our next adventure.”

The blog post update also notes several features that will be removed as well. In that, there are new storage limites for saves, archiving will be disbanded, CoMmunity Jam ends after April 2023. Twitch integration to end, and linking to creations via indreams.me will also be shuttered as well. Even the trial on the PlayStation Store is to be closed for good as well.

We’re very proud of Dreams and grateful for the way you, the community, have embraced all it has to offer. Whilst we’ve always had the desire to build on the foundation of Dreams and expand the experience, when reviewing our plans we were not able to define a sustainable path. We made the decision to change the studio product strategy. This is obviously disappointing to many people inside and outside of Mm, however we are incredibly excited for what will come next.

Media Molecule in the FAQ goes on to note a new IP is in the works rather than a ‘Dreams 2’. “Media Molecule is working on a new project. We are not ready to talk about this yet, we can confirm that it is not Dreams 2, or the Dreams IP.” However, Dreams despite the drastic changes come September will still be available for purchase after the transition.

How surprised are you about the closure for Dreams?

Dreams is currently available for PlayStation 4 & PlayStation VR.
