Developer Monolith Productions has remained a hallmark team under Warner Bros. Games for more than a decade and continued to dish out impressive tech when it came to its titles. After the release for Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, a new project exploring the mythos of Wonder Woman was revealed in 2021. However, it was recently confirmed that the team is to be shelving the effort and closing its doors for good.
From Bloomberg, it was initially reported that development was restarted internally at Monolith after a shift in the direction for the game. But by the end of February, it was said that the team would be shuttering alongside the title it was focused on. In response, firms like GoG has announced it will be offering legacy support for the team’s games on its store.
As for the elephant in the room, Monolith’s Nemesis System, the patented feature will remain in Warner Bros.’ possession for at least another decade. According to the patent filing via Google, the “Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games” is to remain under ownership of “Warner Bros Entertainment Inc” until 2036.
“Methods for managing non-player characters and power centers in a computer game are based on character hierarchies and individualized correspondences between each character’s traits or rank and events that involve other non-player characters or objects,” the patent’s description reads. “Players may share power centers, character hierarchies, non-player characters, and related quests involving the shared objects with other players playing separate and unrelated game instances over a computer network, with the outcome of the quests reflected in different the games. Various configurations of game machines are used to implement the methods.”
While the origins of the Nemesis System was fully implemented in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, the team at Monolith Productions has worked on it since 2010 at least. According to more recent developments including leaked footage of the game, it was revealed that a Batman title centered around Chritopher Nolan’s films was in the works with the system being suited towards it before being retailored for a Lord of the Rings project.
