For fans of the current state of RGG Studio projects, both Yakuza & Judgment are in a good state based off both releases by the Japanese developers. In an excerpt from our review for Lost Judgment, the game “is absolutely worth playing, as long as you keep in mind the game carries a very mature tone.” So for the future of following games, interest piques on the next position the series is heading for next.
So far, it is confirmed that both Yakuza & Judgment are to be separate genres moving forward. Yakuza Lead & Producer Toshihiro Nagoshi & Kazuki Hosokawa explained that Yakuza will continue its turn-based RPG mechanics whilst Judgment follows the path as the action brawler. Additionally, Lost Judgment Game Director Hosokawa told new games could explore settings outside of native Japan.
In a recent interview with Famitsu which Ryokutya2098 transcribed and Video Game Chronicles translated, RGG Studio is working on a new entry outside of both Yakuza & Judgment. “we’re also working on unannounced titles outside of [Yakuza and Judgment],” studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama said.
Additionally, it is also explained that the next mainline entry for Yakuza is to follow the story of Ichiban Kasuga. While the protagonist is to remain from Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the story follows years after the events of the latest entry. As for Judgment, Yokoyama told “we will continue to cherish the Judgement series,” with no further details on the next game.
While information is still light on future project at RGG Studio, staff leadership will be reorganized as both Toshihiro Nagoshi and Daisuke Sato are departing from the team. While the direction for the team is unsure at the time of story, it is reported the duo is being recruited for Tencent. You can read the full report by heading here.
