For majority of this current console generation, many that recognize the name that is IO Interactive associates the studio with one franchise in particular – Hitman. The firm since its first rebooted entry of the series back in 2016 has steadily reinvigorated the brand as many grew excited to revisit the classic formula initially associated with the hardware during the turn of the millennium.
But of course, the team has worked on previous properties before being handed the torch to rekindle the Hitman flame. Being founded back in 1998, IO Interactive has a diverse repertoire of titles under its belt that many recognize from then. Hitman being the catalyst for its line of entries, the team has also worked on other entries such as Kane & Lynch and Freedom Fighters entering the new century.
Back in January 2019, IO Interactive announced to be opening a new team in Malmo, Sweden with a new project in mind for the freshly-founded studio. Dissecting the job listings at the time, it was learned that the team was looking for individuals familiar with multiplayer functionality – something Hitman does not typically feature. The discovery lead to possible returning for the developer’s latter entries since both offered online play.
And now this week it’s been discovered by Gematsu that Freedom Fighters has been re-listed on PC in Europe.
During the initial report of the opening for IO Malmo, it was speculated by Rectify Gaming that the team could be returning to the series after the postings for the Multiplayer Programmer and Senior Multiplayer Programmer were uncovered. But now, it looks that the 2003 entry is inbound for a re-release or more: a complete revamp.
Many users online tout Freedom Fighters to be a hallmark entry of the PlayStation 2 era of titles, similar to Hitman was seen before its re-enlightening these past few years. It is best to assume the firm is still going by the same name, alike it did with Hitman, which explains the game being relisted in the region. It should also be noted that the firm also formed an arrangement with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for an unnamed new project last year as well – presuming to be the now listed Freedom Fighters.
Currently, IO Interactive is underway with the third and last entry of the returning Hitman series which arrives this coming January. You can read the full announcement for the game by heading here.
Would you pick up Freedom Fighters if it makes a comeback?
