New Reports On Update For Mortal Kombat Sequel Reveals Johnny Cage, Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, Jerrod, And Sindel Casting

Although films like Sonic the Hedgehog at the time has proven to break the video game adaptation curse, many were still unsure how Mortal Kombat would be received. Even Warner Bros. unsure how many would respond to the film, it did view the production to being one of its ‘top assets’ short to hitting theaters. Even more, Sub Zero actor Joe Taslim did share he signed to do four more films as the character.

By February 2022, Warner Bros. shared that Mortal Kombat was the most popular weekend film on HBO Max that year. The movie overshadowed Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Suicide Squad, Godzilla vs. Kong, and The Matrix Resurrections with over 3.8 million households viewing the first weekend. Additionally, the sequel already grabbed Moon Night writer Jeremy Slater to also pen the story for the new film.

In a recent string of reports, new casting information has surfaced online for the next Mortal Kombat film. From The Wrap, it reported that Karl Urban (Dredd, The Boys) will be portraying the long-teased Johnny Cage for the follow-up. This was wholly confirmed by the film’s producer Todd Garner when he tweeted the story via Twitter.

Elsewhere from Deadline, it also reports that new castings have been made on other characters that will be introduced in the new film. Martyn Ford (Red Sonja, F9: The Fast Saga) is casted as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam (Joy Ride, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen (Get Free, The Spy Who Never Dies) as Sindel, and Damon Herriman who voiced Kabal in the first film will also be Quan Chi.

Of course, many Mortal Kombat fans are excited for what’s to come – and that doesn’t even pertain to the film. Recently, NetherRealm Studios announced Mortal Kombat 1: a reboot of sorts for the series as it plans to ship later this September. You can read the full report by heading here.
